Overheard my neighbor trashing a book club pick and it made me rethink my taste

I was at a coffee shop in Pittsburgh last week and heard a guy say our last read had 'lazy character development and a plot that just gave up halfway.' At first I was annoyed, but then I realized he was kinda right about the second half dragging. Has anyone else had a random comment totally change how they felt about a book they liked at first?

...and then someone at the library book sale told me my favorite summer read was 'basically a soap opera with better grammar.' I laughed it off but that night I started noticing all the dramatic misunderstandings and couldn't unsee it. Now every time a character trips into a confession scene I cringe. Did that guy ruin it or just peel back the curtain for you?
