Physical copy or audiobook? Our book club split right down the middle

Our group of 8 picked a dense history book about the Silk Road for March, and half the members swore by the print version while the other half listened on their commutes, they even started arguing about whether page numbers even count anymore. I went with the audiobook because I drive 45 minutes each way to work in Austin, and I found I missed the maps and footnotes that the narration skimmed over, so I never felt as confident in the discussions. Which format does your club usually go with and how do you handle members who only did one version?

That's a smart idea to have both formats pairing up for discussions. Maybe assign each chapter to a pair with one reader and one listener, then have them swap notes before the meeting. The reader flags the maps and footnotes, the listener flags what the narration emphasized or cut. That way you get the best of both worlds without the turf war. Plus it makes the commute people feel less left out and the page people less like they're doing homework.

Damn, that's a solid system but who's keeping score on the disagreements? Like when the reader swears a footnote was crucial and the listener says the audio skipped it entirely, what's the tiebreaker? I feel like you'd need some ground rules before someone gets defensive about their format. Also, are we talking about swapping notes before everyone's even finished the chapter, or is that more of a mid-week check-in? Seems like the timing could get messy with people's schedules. I'm genuinely curious how you'd handle the person who does both, reads it AND listens to it, do they get double votes or are they just the referee?
