Picked up a worn copy of Dune for $3 at a thrift store over a pristine hardcover for $20
My book club was debating which edition to use for our next read. I figured the beat-up paperback had character and saved me cash. Turned out the map was missing and I got lost in the first 50 pages. Anyone else regret cheaping out on a book?

Had the same thing happen with a used copy of The Name of the Wind. Missing the map at the front. Spent two hours confused about where Kvothe was traveling. Cheap lesson learned. Now I always flip through the first few pages before buying a used book. Check for maps, missing pages, or water damage. Maps are usually the first thing to go in a paperback.

Totally been there. Before I buy any used book now I check for maps and the copyright page to see if anything is cut out. Found a copy of Dune at a garage sale once that was missing the glossary. Made the whole thing confusing until I looked up a PDF online. Now I just carry my phone to quick reference if there's missing stuff, but I still grab the cheap copies. Saves me from blowing money on fancy editions I'll just mess up anyway.
