Printed books beat e-readers every time for deep reading

I read Dune on a Kindle last summer and then picked up a paperback of the same book at a thrift store for $2. The paper copy made me slow down and catch details I totally missed on the screen. Am I the only one who retains less from digital pages?

Printed books force you to actually sit with the material instead of skimming around like we do on screens. It's the same thing with how people scroll through news articles on their phones vs reading a physical newspaper, you just don't engage the same way. Digital reading turns everything into a quick snack while paper is more like a full meal where you actually chew on the ideas lol. There's something about the weight and the smell and the turning of pages that makes your brain treat the information as more important. You're definitely not alone on this one, it's a real difference in how our brains process stuff.

Oh man, I actually just listened to a podcast about this where they talked about how reading on a screen makes our eyes move in a totally different pattern, like more of a scanning thing instead of really following the words. It's wild how that little physical difference changes whether we actually retain what we read or not.
