PSA: our book club dropped $150 on those printed discussion guides and nobody used them
I pushed for buying the fancy printed discussion guides for our club in Minneapolis last month and it was a total waste of $150. Ten of us tossed in $15 each and after two meetings nobody even cracked theirs open past the first page. Everyone just talked about the actual book and went off on tangents, which is kind of the whole point anyway. Turns out a free list of three questions jotted on a napkin does the same job. Anybody else get talked into spending club money on stuff that just sat there?
Went through something similar with our group in St. Paul, but I ended up on the other side of it. We bought a cheap set of laminated question cards for like $12 and they actually got used because we just kept them in the middle of the table. The trick was not handing them out, just leaving them there so people could grab one when the talk slowed down. The $150 guides probably failed because you handed them out like homework. Put stuff in the middle of the table and let it sit there, that works way better.
