Ran into a librarian who said my book club picks were 'too safe'
I was at the downtown library last Tuesday grabbing some thrillers when the head librarian, an older guy named Tom, glanced at my stack and said 'you really need to branch out from bestsellers.' He handed me a book about a forgotten poet from the 1920s, and I ended up loving it more than anything I'd read in months. Have you ever had someone in a bookstore or library totally change what you thought you liked to read?

Old Tom just trying to make everyone's reading list look like a grad school syllabus.

Right there with you @matthewsullivan. It feels like every group chat or local event now has that one person who has to make everything feel like a college lecture. You see it at book clubs with people acting like they're grading each other. Happens at dinner parties too when someone brings up a simple movie and someone else has to explain its "deeper meaning" for twenty minutes. Old Tom is just the online version of that guy. Sometimes a fun thriller is just a fun thriller.
