Rant: Our book club almost split over picking a 400-page literary novel vs a 250-page thriller
Last month in our Austin book club, we had 9 members and a 3-week deadline to pick our next read for July. Half of us wanted to push through a dense literary novel about a family in Dublin, and the other half wanted a fast thriller that we could finish on a weekend trip. I voted for the thriller since I work two jobs and only get about 25 minutes a night to read. We ended up picking the literary one by a single vote, and I kid you not, 4 people showed up to the meeting versus our usual 8. The folks who wanted the thriller didn't even crack it open, and one guy literally said, "I'll just wait for the movie." Now we're fighting about whether to set a page limit for future picks. Has any other club solved the long book vs short book problem without someone quitting?
