Shoutout to the person who suggested we read a book outside our usual genre
We picked a sci-fi novel after six months of only literary fiction, and the debate about the ending was the most heated we've had all year. Has your group ever tried a genre switch that actually sparked better discussion?

My friend's book club got stuck in a thriller rut and switched to a romance novel for a change. Ngl, they spent the whole meeting arguing about whether the main couple had any real chemistry or if it was just plot convenience. It got way more personal than their usual talks about murder clues. They said it was the first time some of the quieter members really jumped into the fight.

That part about the quieter members jumping into the fight is so real. My cousin's group did the same thing, swapping mysteries for a fantasy romance. They were supposed to talk about the magic system, but the whole night turned into a screaming match over whether the elf prince actually liked the human blacksmith or was just using her for her skills. Two people who barely spoke all year were red in the face about it. It's funny how made-up relationships can feel way more urgent than solving a crime.

Ever think romance plots just feel more personal than solving a mystery? I used to roll my eyes at that stuff, but seeing people get that fired up over fictional couples actually makes sense now.
