Swapped the book club discussion guide for the regular old questions and wow, what a difference

Last month in our Tulsa group I ditched the fancy publisher guide with its 40 page analysis and just asked everyone "who did you trust least in chapter 3 and why" and suddenly people were fighting over the plot twists instead of nodding off, has anyone else noticed that simpler prompts beat the professional ones every time?

Honestly, those publisher guides are written by people who clearly never sat in a real book club. They read like a college syllabus, not a fun Tuesday night with snacks. Tbh, asking "who did you trust least" is genius because it turns everyone into a detective with an opinion, and suddenly the quiet lady in the back is yelling about chapter 3. The pro questions always feel like they're trying to make you sound smart instead of just talking about the story. Ngl, I'd rather hear someone argue about a character's dumb decision than analyze the author's use of weather as foreshadowing. Give me the messy, heated debate over the polite, nodding circle any day of the week.
