That 'must-read' book club pick cost me $35 and 8 hours I'll never get back

Last month my book club voted on 'The Midnight Library' by Matt Haig and I seriously don't get the hype. I pushed through 300 pages waiting for it to get good and it just never did. The whole thing felt like a shallow self-help pamphlet dressed up as a novel. Did anyone else find it painfully predictable or am I just missing something here?

Oh man, "shallow self-help pamphlet dressed up as a novel" - that's exactly what my friend Sarah said about it. She read it for her book club too and spent the whole time rolling her eyes at how the main character just kept having these neat little life lessons handed to her (like when she got to be a glaciologist for five minutes and learned... nothing really). Sarah said she kept waiting for some actual plot twist or real stakes, but nope, just another "maybe the life you have is actually fine" moment dressed in fancy sentences. She ended up donating her copy to a Little Free Library and told me she'd rather read the back of a cereal box than another Matt Haig book.
