That poetry night at the Maple Street library got heated fast
Went to the open mic reading last Saturday, and someone called a poem 'too on the nose' while another person said ambiguity is just lazy writing. Both sides had solid points, but the room split right down the middle and even the host got pulled in. Does a book club debate like that make a poem stronger, or does it just kill the vibe for the author?

Maple Street's got a weird echo in that back room, so half the heat probably came from people not hearing the lines right and guessing at what they meant. That said, the real issue is nobody asked the poet what they were going for. At the two open mics I've been to, the author just stood there like a statue while strangers argued over their work, and that's the part that felt off. A debate can tighten a poem if it happens after the writer gets a chance to say "actually, I meant this" or "no, I wrote it that way on purpose." Without that, you're just grading an essay the author never signed. The vibe only dies when the poet becomes a prop, not when people disagree.
