The moderator shut down our poetry night and it split the group

We were at the library meeting room last Thursday and someone brought up a poem that had an old-timey slur in it, and the moderator ended the whole event 15 minutes early. Half the members think censorship ruined the night, the other half think the moderator did the right thing. Has anyone else had a moderator step in like that and how did your group handle the fallout?
