TIL my book club nearly started a riot over a sandwich scene

Last Tuesday at the community center, our group was discussing that part in 'The Secret History' where the characters have a tense lunch, and I joked that the tuna salad detail was the real villain. Before I knew it, two members were arguing about whether the sandwich symbolized class division or just bad writing, and someone actually threw a napkin. Has anyone else had a debate spiral over something totally random in a book?

Read this thing on BookTok the other day about the exact same book, apparently that tuna sandwich argument got so heated at one library they had to call security. Honestly think it's hilarious how a food detail can get people that worked up, especially when it's just one small scene in a whole novel. Ngl I've seen people nearly come to blows over whether a character's hat choice was a metaphor or just a bad fashion decision.

Started scrolling through this thread and realized how much I've seen the same kind of thing play out in grocery store lines, @kelly968. People will get genuinely upset over which brand of bread the store ran out of, like it's some huge personal betrayal instead of just a restock issue. It's funny how we treat tiny details like they carry the weight of the whole world when really it's just our own brains making a big deal over nothing. Honestly the tuna sandwich thing makes me laugh because people will defend their take on fictional food like it's a family recipe.
