TIL our book club picks way harder books when we vote in person vs over text
We run a small book club out of my buddy's place in Fort Worth, about 9 of us, and two rounds back we tried something different. Instead of picking the next book over group text like always, we did a live vote at the end of the meeting. The text picks kept landing on stuff like short thrillers and beach reads, the kind of book nobody has to work at. The in person vote got us into a 500 page history of the Dust Bowl that honestly scared me when I saw it win. I think what made the difference is nobody wants to be the one in the room who says they'd rather read something easy, but over text you can quietly vote for the low effort pick and nobody knows. We actually finished the Dust Bowl one and had one of our best talks in a year. Now I'm wondering if we should keep doing live votes or if that pressure is a bad thing. Does your club pick books live or online, and does it change what wins?
