Chose PVA over hide glue on a 1890s family Bible and I'm still kicking myself
I had to rebind my grandma's Bible from 1892 and picked PVA because it was faster and I had a client deadline that Friday in Toledo. Three months later the spine cracked right at the hinge because that old paper couldn't flex with the stiff glue. I spent $60 on materials and 14 hours doing it right the first time, only to redo the whole spine with hide glue last weekend. The difference in how the signatures move is night and day once it's dry. Anyone else learned this the hard way, and do you keep both glues on the bench or just stick with hide?
