Glue stick lining is not worth the trouble for most books
Everyone swears by glue sticks for spine linings but after 12 books I went back to paste. The glue stick dries too stiff and I had cracking on a century binding last fall. Has anyone else had better luck with something besides paste or PVA?

That glue stick disaster you described sounds rough, I've been there too. I had a similar thing happen with a binding I was really proud of, and it felt like all that work just disappeared. The wheat paste and PVA mix is honestly the safest bet I've found for keeping things flexible.

I tried a glue stick on a repair once and the book literally snapped in half when I opened it two months later. Felt like I was getting lectured by the book itself. Switched to a wheat paste mix with a tiny bit of PVA and it's way more forgiving. Still get the occasional crack but at least I'm not holding a two-piece book anymore.
