Hit 300 coptic stitch spines before I got the right feel for it

I kept seeing people rave about getting the thread tension perfect after like 10 books, but for me it took 300 coptic stitch spines made over the last 8 months before the covers finally sat flat instead of bowing out. What clicked was watching a video where a binder in Portland showed how she pulls the thread toward the spine hole, not away from it, and I felt dumb for not trying that earlier. Has anyone else had a stupid simple fix like that change their whole stitch game, or was I just slow on the uptake?
