I switched from traditional sewing frames to a simple DIY jig and never looked back

For about 7 years I used a proper wooden sewing frame for all my bindings. Cost me $120 from a craft supplier in Portland. I thought you needed the tension and setup to do good work. Last spring I got tired of setting it up at 2 AM before my night shift and just clamped my text block between two boards with binder clips. Honestly the results are the same for most of what I do. The frame made sense for big heavy books but for my usual stuff it was just extra hassle. Has anyone else ditched a traditional tool for something homemade that works just as well?

I switched about three years ago after I got tired of my frame taking up half my desk space in my tiny apartment in Boston. Just use two thick cutting boards from the dollar store and some heavy duty rubber bands I picked up at a office supply place. Works fine for books up to 400 pages or so, and when I'm done I just stack the boards back under my cutting mat.

Get that completely. I moved into a place a few years back where desk space was basically a premium and had to get creative with my setup too. It's wild how much you can rig up with random stuff from around the house and still get solid results, honestly.
