I was told to water my leather with a sponge and I ruined a whole project

A guy at my old shop swore by wetting leather with a damp sponge before stamping it. Said it gave better definition. I tried it on a belt I was making for a buddy's wedding gift and the leather got all blotchy and warped. Ended up having to scrap the whole thing and buy new leather. Has anyone else had that happen with sponges vs just using a spray bottle?

Sponges always seem to cause more problems than they solve, don't they.

The $5 silicone scrubber I bought at Target six months ago still looks brand new. That sponge you're talking about probably had a meltdown in the microwave by now, right? Did you ever try the dish rag route instead, or do you just keep buying new sponges every two weeks like most people? I'm genuinely curious how long folks let those things sit in the sink before the smell gets too bad.
