Just realized people are skipping the grain test on new book cloth
I watched a binder in Portland tear a whole sheet because they folded it against the grain, and they said 'it felt stiff anyway'. That tear cost them about $40 and a project. How do you all check the grain direction on your materials?

My teacher swore by the tear test.

Oh man, the tear test is such a gamble though. It only tells you if the paper is currently dry, not if the glue or binding is already weak and about to fail. Seen so many "good" pages just fall out later because the test missed the real problem.
