Just switched to Japanese paring knives for leather

I spent 6 months fighting with a standard craft knife on my book covers. A guy at a binding workshop let me try his Japanese paring knife and the leather cut clean on the first pass. Anyone else find that the blade angle makes that big a difference?

Six months of suffering when all you needed was a sharper blade angle, ouch.

Did the person who sold it to you not mention blade angle at all during setup? What made you finally figure that out after six months?
