My uncle the retired printer told me to use wheat paste instead of PVA for a leather spine repair and now I'm scraping dried glue off my kitchen table

He swore by the old methods and said it would hold better, but three days later the paste had soaked through the book cloth and turned into a crusty mess that even my steam iron couldn't soften, so has anyone else had luck salvaging a project gone wrong with wheat paste?

Tried wheat paste once on a model ship. Used too much water. Still finding bits of it in my toolbox.

Wheat paste works fine if you know how to mix it. Your uncle wasn't wrong.
