Picked up a used lying press for $40 at an estate sale

The press was missing the metal platen and the wood was all warped, so I spent Saturday sanding it down and gluing a piece of granite countertop scrap as a replacement. Has anyone else tried using stone for a pressing surface instead of wood or metal?

Huh, granite seems like it would crack under pressure honestly.

Granite is actually pretty tough stuff, it's got that nice crystalline structure that holds up. But I remember my cousin tried to use a granite countertop for a home project and hit it with a hammer by accident. Cracks just spiderwebbed out from where he hit it. So yeah, it's strong but not unbreakable like some people think. Makes you wonder how they get those big slabs shipped without everything falling apart.
