Tuesday was the worst day I've had in 12 years of binding

I was working on a three volume set of old maps for a library in Austin. The leather I ordered from a new supplier had a hidden dry rot spot right in the middle of the front cover. I didn't catch it until after I'd glued and pressed it, and the whole thing cracked when I tried to round the spine. Had to start over from scratch on that volume, which ate up about 8 hours of work. Has anyone else run into bad leather from a supplier you trusted and how did you handle the return?

Guess I should count myself lucky my bad leather day only ruined a single bookmark.

@schmidt.eva that bookmark still cracked though, same rot pattern I've been seeing everywhere lately.
