Warning: I spent 3 hours trying to get the head and tail bands on my first leather-bound journal to look right

I finally got them to sit flush by using a tiny bit of PVA glue on the back of the linen tape before sewing, which no tutorial I watched mentioned, so has anyone else got a better trick for that?

Ever tried wetting the linen tape first? It makes it way easier to shape before it dries stiff.

Consider the wet tape trick from palmer.jana, but does that risk the dampness bleeding into the leather and staining it later on. The glue method seems like a safer fix for that specific worry.
