My air layering moss ball went moldy after 6 weeks, what did I do wrong?

I wrapped a branch of my Japanese maple in sphagnum moss and plastic wrap like the YouTube video said, but when I unwrapped it this morning the whole thing was gray and slimy. I kept it moist but maybe too moist, since I was watering it every other day in my Portland garage. Has anyone else had this happen, or should I just try again with less water and more airflow?

Admit it, I've killed more moss balls than I've successfully rooted. Maybe try poking a few holes in the plastic next time, that garage is basically a swamp.
