My friend said my plant obsession is just a phase, and it got me thinking.
He told me, 'You just like the way they look, you don't really care about the science.' It made me realize I've never actually tried to learn the Latin names for any of my 20 houseplants. Do you think you need the textbook knowledge to be a real botany lover?

Totally get what @grant826 means, you pick it up over time. Your friend sounds kinda gatekeepy, loving how plants look is a totally valid reason to be into them.

You ever just look at your plants and feel good, isn't that the whole point? I have like 30 plants now, still don't know most Latin names. And @rosed32 is right, you pick it up if you want to. Tell your friend to chill, botany isn't a test you gotta pass.
