My neighbor insisted I prune my hydrangeas in March, but my blooms were terrible this year.

She swore by it for 20 years, but everything I read says to prune right after they flower. Has anyone else followed old advice that backfired on their garden?

Old advice" reminds me of my grandpa's tomato stake method that just made a huge mess.

Yeah @murray.rowan, that old stake method always seems to fall over once the plant gets heavy. I switched to those spiral metal stakes you push deep into the ground, and they actually hold up. Makes a huge difference by the end of the season.

Honestly though, sometimes the old ways work because they're based on decades of watching what actually happens in that specific yard.
