That $80 moisture meter from Amazon gave me false readings for 4 months

I got this fancy digital moisture meter off Amazon thinking it would help me water my ferns and calatheas better. Turns out it was reading 20% higher than the actual soil moisture, and I nearly drowned my Monstera deliciosa before I figured it out. It took me about 12 weeks of yellowing leaves and guessing games before a buddy at the local nursery in Portland told me to test it in a cup of dry dirt. Has anyone else had luck with a specific brand that actually works for houseplants?

Bet you wish you'd just stuck with the good old finger test like @daniel214 mentioned.

Wait, nearly 4 months of guessing before you realized it?
