That retired gardener told me to stop pruning my roses in fall
She said I was cutting off next year's blooms by pruning in October. I switched to late winter pruning after the last frost and my roses have twice as many flowers now. Anyone else get bad advice from gardening books that turned out wrong?

Last year I pruned in late October. Killed half my hydrangeas. My neighbor laughed and showed me her garden after a February prune. Now I only touch my roses in early spring. That old timer knew what she was talking about.

Read something similar about how fall pruning messes with their dormancy cycle, @dylan_thompson.
