The day I stopped treating my ferns like they were cacti (it was embarrassing)

I used to water all my plants on the same schedule (you know, Sunday mornings) because I figured dirt was dirt. Then I killed my third Boston fern in a row and my neighbor Diane literally said "are you sure you're not drowning them on purpose?". So I finally bought a moisture meter from the hardware store for $12 and tested the soil before watering. Now my ferns are actually fluffy and green instead of dropping leaves everywhere. Has anyone else had to completely relearn how to water after years of just guessing?

Moisture meters are a waste of money, just learn to feel the dirt.

Wait, isn't poking your finger in the dirt way more satisfying though?
