Unpopular opinion: I stopped babying my ferns with misting and they look better now

Used to hit every frond with a spray bottle twice a day, like clockwork, for about 3 years. Read somewhere that Boston ferns need that humidity boost or they crisp up. Then last summer I went on a 10 day trip to Portland and forgot to set a timer. Came back expecting a brown mess, but the two ferns on my porch were actually greener and drooping less than before. The misting was just keeping the surface wet, which attracted some tiny fungus gnats too. Now I only water at the soil line, maybe every 4 days in summer, and they push out new fronds faster. Anyone else drop the misting routine and see better results, or am I just lucky with a humid yard?
