Vent: my greenhouse thermometer lied all through the freeze last week

Last Wednesday in Eugene, my cheap digital thermometer read 38 degrees so I left my rare begonias uncovered. Woke up to 24 and every leaf turned to mush, 7 plants gone including my variegated sir percy. The battery was low but it never warned me, just kept showing a nice safe number. Has anyone else had a sensor fail exactly when you needed it most, and what do you use now that's actually reliable?
