Was watering my pothos wrong for like 2 years

I noticed the leaves were all yellow and droopy no matter what I did. My friend came over and saw me dumping water right into the center of the pot and said 'you're supposed to soak the soil from the bottom, not drown the stem'. Has anyone else had a basic care routine completely backfire on them?

My friend had the SAME problem with her monstera for like a year and a half. She was pouring water right down into the center where the stems meet, just like you described. I told her to try bottom watering with a shallow dish and her plant perked up in like two weeks. The leaves stopped getting those brown crispy edges too. It's CRAZY how such a small change makes that big of a difference.

Bet it was rot setting in from that soggy crown.

Hold on, is it really that serious though? I mean plants have been growing in the wild for millions of years without anyone bottom watering them with a shallow dish. Seems like as long as the roots get water eventually, they'll figure it out.
