I thought the small coffee shop down the street was doomed when a chain moved in next door
When a big chain opened up right next to Rosie's on 5th Ave in Portland last spring, I figured her little shop with the hand painted sign was done for. But she leaned into the one thing they couldn't copy, she knows like 40 regulars by name and remembers their orders, and her line is still out the door at 7am while the chain sits half empty. Turns out being the place where people feel like regulars beats a rewards app every time. Has anyone else watched a small shop hold its ground against a big chain like that?
