Switched from freelance branding to a retainer model last quarter
I used to take one-off logo jobs from local shops in Cleveland, always scrambling for the next project. Moving to a monthly retainer with three steady clients gave me a predictable $4k income and let me actually plan ahead. Anyone else find retainer work more stable than project-based?

The downside nobody talks about is how retainer clients start treating you like an employee instead of a partner. Once that monthly payment hits your account, some of them forget you're a freelancer and start expecting you to be available at all hours for small requests that weren't in the original agreement. I've had clients try to tack on extra revisions, quick social media posts, and "just a few lines of copy" without realizing that adds up over time. You have to be really clear about what the retainer covers and what's extra, otherwise you end up working twice as many hours for the same flat fee. It's stable money but stability comes with its own kind of headache if you don't set hard boundaries from day one.
