Found out my great aunt's old sewing machine is worth more than my car

I was cleaning out my grandma's basement last weekend and found this old Singer sewing machine from the 1920s in a wooden cabinet. I figured it was just junk, but I looked up the serial number online and turns out it's a specific model that collectors go crazy for. One sold on eBay last year for nearly $4,000. Mine's got all the original accessories and the decals are still in decent shape. I had no idea old sewing machines could be worth that much, especially something that was just sitting there gathering dust. Now I'm kind of hooked on checking thrift stores for vintage machines. Anyone else stumble into an expensive hobby by accident like this?

Actually, that price sounds a bit off to me. My buddy collects vintage Singers and he says most of them top out around $1,500 to $2,000 even with all the attachments, unless it's one of the really rare featherweight models from the 1930s. Still a great find, just wouldn't count on that full $4,000.

Hold up, the eBay listing was legit and that one clearly sold for $4k, so the market is real for certain models and conditions. Your buddy might be thinking of the common ones that flood antique malls, not the rare 1920s models with complete original cabinets and paperwork. Price guides are just averages, collectibles are all about finding the exact right buyer who gets emotional about the decals and history.
