I thought keeping a worm bin in my garage was nonsense until the thing ate my whole coffee can in 2 weeks
My neighbor Dale kept telling me about his worm farm for months and I honestly thought it was the silliest thing I'd ever heard, like why would you pay $30 for a bucket of dirt and bugs. He finally dropped off a little starter bin last March because I wouldn't shut up about how dumb it sounded. I set it up in the corner of my garage in Toledo with shredded newspaper and a handful of red wigglers and pretty much forgot about it. Two weeks later I dumped in a whole coffee can of grounds and old banana peels just to see what would happen, and when I checked back the food was basically gone. No smell, no flies, just dark crumbly stuff at the bottom that my tomato plants went nuts over. Now I'm the guy asking the coffee shop for their used grounds and my wife thinks I've lost it. Anybody else run one through the winter here, and does the cold actually kill the bin or do they just slow way down?
