My first week soap carving left me with 14 bandaged fingers

I picked up a cheap bar of olive oil soap and a plastic knife from the dollar store in Spokane last week, thinking I'd try one of those tiny flower carvings I saw online. By day three I had carved my thumb twice, dropped the bar in the sink, and the flower looked like a melted potato with a stem. The trick that finally worked was wetting the soap every few minutes and using a toothpick to outline the shape first. Has anyone else started with something way harder than the tutorial made it look, or is my hand just not built for this?
