My friend said I was nuts for using a hand plane on rough lumber till I showed him the finish

I started woodworking 6 months ago, picked up an old Stanley hand plane at a flea market for $15. My buddy Mike told me to just use a sander like everyone else. Said I was wasting time. So I stuck with it, watched some YouTube videos on sharpening. Last week I flattened a board of red oak with that plane, got a finish so smooth it looked sanded to 220 grit. Mike came over, ran his hand over it, and just stared. He finally admitted maybe old tools have a place. Now he wants me to teach him. Anyone else get told a hobby path was dumb only to prove it works better?

Oh man, I was totally in the same boat before. I used to swear by the sander approach but watching how this method worked really flipped my view. I can see why you're converted now, it just makes more sense when you actually see it in action.
