My grandma's sourdough starter was from 1972, and after she passed I tossed it without thinking. Now I wish I'd tried to keep it going.

I finally got into sourdough baking last spring and it hit me what I threw away - a starter that was 50 years old with generations of wild yeast built up. Has anyone here revived an old starter or wished they'd kept a family recipe alive?

Honestly, that hurts just reading it. Tbh I did something similar with my great-aunt's banana bread recipe. It was on this old stained index card with her handwriting and specific instructions like "add a pinch more cinnamon if the mood feels right." I let it get crumpled up in a move and now I can't remember her exact ratios or whether it called for butter or shortening. You don't realize how much those little things matter until they're gone.

Write that stuff down someplace digital too... voice memos work for the mood parts.
