Overheard a guy at the hardware store talking about using dental floss for tiny model rigging
I was picking up sandpaper last Saturday and this older man was telling the clerk how he uses waxed dental floss instead of buying expensive thread for his ship in a bottle models. He said it's stronger and doesn't fray after about 6 months of use. I tried it on my dollhouse curtain rods and it worked perfect, no breakage so far. Anyone else find random household stuff that works better than the hobby store gear?

Three years ago I would've laughed at that but now I buy floss in bulk for all my craft stuff.

Yeah that "stronger and doesn't fray" part really got me too because I used to be one of those people who rolled my eyes at the idea of using something not made for crafting. I figured you HAD to buy the special thread from the hobby store or it wouldn't look right. But after seeing @fiona330 mention buying floss in bulk I finally gave in and tried it on some tiny rope for a Christmas village display. Total game changer. The waxed floss holds knots way better than anything I've bought in the little spools and it doesn't shred when you pull it tight. So now I'm actually the one telling people at the fabric store to check the dental aisle first.
