That weird spoon carving hobby looked dumb until I tried it at a cabin
My buddy dragged me to this workshop up near Lake George last fall. I thought carving a wooden spoon from a birch log would be boring and pointless. But after 4 hours of shaving curls and sanding, I ended up with a spoon I actually use for my morning oatmeal. The feel of the grain and the oil finish is way different than any store bought one. I spent $35 on a hook knife and I've made like 8 spoons since then. Has anyone else gotten sucked into a hobby they thought was goofy at first?

Totally, I had the same thing happen with whittling. My uncle handed me a chunk of basswood and a basic knife at a family picnic, I was like "this is some grandpa stuff" but I ended up sitting there for three hours making a little bird that looked more like a potato. It was just so calming to focus on the shavings and the shape coming out, you know? Now I keep a knife and some wood in my car for when I'm waiting for appointments or whatever, it's way better than doomscrolling on my phone.
