TIL competitive snail racing is a real thing with actual leagues

I wandered into a pub in Congham, England last weekend and there was a whole crowd around a table with numbered snails on a damp cloth. The winner covered 13 inches in 2 minutes and the owner got a trophy shaped like a giant snail shell. Has anyone else stumbled into a weird niche sport by accident?

Actually, most snail races use a 14-inch track, so your 13 inches was still a solid finish but not a record.
