Yesterday at the flea market in Portland, a random guy changed my whole approach to restoring old tools.
I've always been a wire brush and grinder guy, just blasting rust off everything. This dude watched me for a minute and said "you're ruining the patina, kid." He showed me his beat up Stanley plane from 1912 that still had the original japanning and just a light oil coat. Now I'm soaking my finds in vinegar and scrubbing with brass wool. Anybody else switch to gentler methods after someone called them out?

Respectfully, I see it different. A clean tool that works well beats an old patina that looks cool but stays crusty in my book.
