Am I the only one who switched to a grout bag on a 12 foot garden wall and cut my mortar waste way down?
I had a small garden wall job in Fresno last month, about 12 feet long and 3 courses high, and I usually just butter the bricks and sling mortar off the trowel the normal way. This time I filled a $22 grout bag instead, mostly because the homeowner wanted a really clean face and I was tired of scrubbing smears. I ended up using about 1 and a half bags of mortar mix for the whole thing, when the same wall would normally eat closer to 3. The joints came out more even too, and I only had to strike them once. I know it is slower going, so maybe it only makes sense on small face work where the mess matters. Has anyone run a grout bag on a bigger job, or am I about to learn why that is a bad idea?
Boy, my buddy tried that on a 30 foot retaining wall and his hands were shot by lunch. The bag itself worked fine, joints looked sharp, but he was squeezing that thing for hours and his forearms cramped up so bad he had to stop. He said never again past about 15 feet unless he had a second guy just filling bags for him.
