Mortar mix I've used for 10 years suddenly gave me nothing but trouble
Started a small retaining wall at a house in Oakville last Wednesday. Used the same bagged mortar mix I always grab from the local yard. First batch I mixed up was like wet sand, barely held together. Second batch crumbled when I tried to tool the joints. Third time I actually measured the water instead of eyeballing it and still got a weak batch. Ended up chipping out about 4 feet of work before I switched to a different brand. Has anyone else had a trusted mix just go bad on them out of nowhere?

Check the lot number on that bag and see if it matches any others you've got laying around. I had a similar thing happen with a brand I used for years, turned out the batch had too much fly ash or something in it. I started doing a little test mix before I even bring it to the job, just a small batch in a bucket, and let it set for a day to see if it cures hard. Also maybe check if your water source changed, some water with too much chlorine or minerals can mess with the chemical reaction.
