Noticed a big shift in mortar mixes over the last 20 years

I got into bricklaying back in 2003 and we used a straight Type N mix for almost everything around here in Ohio. Now it seems like every job calls for some specific blend with additives or special sand. Last week I had to use a rapid-set mortar for a retaining wall because the customer wanted it done in one day. The stuff set up in about 30 minutes and I barely had time to tool my joints. Has anyone else had to adjust their whole routine because of these new mixes?

Did the mix come with a stopwatch or did you just guess on that one?
