So I've been buttering my bricks wrong for like, a decade apparently

A guy from a crew in Boise saw me using a trowel that was way too wide for the brick type and just said 'you're fighting the tool, man'. Has anyone else had a total 'aha' moment with something basic like that?

Doubt it matters as much as samthompson says.

Is this the same with concrete trowels too? My buddy Jack was out in his garage trying to lay a brick patio for like two years and his backs hurt all the time. Then his uncle came by and handed him a smaller trowel and said to stop using the butt of the handle to tap the bricks in. He was basically just jamming them down all wrong. Now he finishes a row in like ten minutes flat and says it's all because he was holding the trowel like a butter knife instead of a pencil.
