Honestly, I've seen guys get way too hung up on the fancy gear. My old mentor did foundations for forty years with a string line, a plumb bob, and his eyes. That laser level is great until the battery dies on site or it gets a knock. Sometimes the old way, where you have to really look and think, makes you double check your work in a way a dot on the wall doesn't.

You bet, that "plumb bob never runs out of juice" line got me good. I've been in the same boat running grade on a backcountry job where my fancy transit took a dirt nap. Old school string line and a water level saved my hide. No batteries to die, no electronics to short out. I still keep a basic torpedo level and a chalk line in my bag for those days when the tech just wants to fight you.
